This highly interactive and experiential presentation will focus on learning how to move “from and for the bones,” using anatomical landmarks known as the “alphabet soup of the skeleton” to initiate and guide movement. Emphasis will be placed on optimal anatomical alignment and its importance for both weight-bearing and muscle action on the bones. The participant will learn how Tadasana, Vrksasana, Sukhasana and Shavasana benefit the bones and, combined with Pranayama, are key components of asana practice.

Principles of movement for Yoga asana, including both movement to strengthen bone and movement that would be contra-indicated for persons with low bone mass, will be discussed. To increase the Yoga teacher’s perspective on the issues of low bone mass in Yoga class populations, a few minutes will be spent on the pathology and epidemiology of low bone mass around the globe.
